Potential win-win for restaurants, consumers

Kudos to Dave Andelman, the CEO of the hit TV show The Phantom Gourmet, for proposing a bi-partisan legislative bill that has now been introduced by four local senators, two Democrats and two Republicans. Currently, state law allows restaurants to serve alcohol beginning at 8 a.m., Monday to Saturday, but not until noon on Sunday. The “Restaurant Rejuvenation Act” will allow restaurants to serve alcohol beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Simply put, this makes sense. Brunch is big business in Massachusetts and there is no reason that diners should be denied the opportunity to have a mimosa at 10:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning. Restaurants do about 60% of their business on the weekend. Hard-working proprietors should be able to make some extra money on Sunday morning alcohol consumption, since beverages are where many restaurants can earn substantial profits.

As Andelman adeptly argues, this slight change could earn businesses tens of thousands of dollars each year, with no additional taxpayer costs. Sounds like a win-win.
